Usually when you ask someone to name their favorite player, their answer will most likely be a striker, a scorer or the captain. There are few defenders who receive the recognition they deserve. Sergio’s versatility and capability to perform in all defensive positions is a blessing for any coach as he performs outstandingly both as a centre back and as a right back. Aside for his phenomenal defensive skills, extraordinary drive, powerful shot, and a unique goal-scoring instinct, he is a true example of devotion, leadership and loyalty. His unwavering respect for others is evident in the way he regards everyone, from the elderly fans he greets in the streets to the small children he plays with at the charity events he frequents. I have tattooed on my left hand, the SR Chinese wolf tattoo which he has behind his ear in reverence of his character.
There are those extreme fans that will not be stopped by anything. There are girls from Malaga who went into a state of hysteria and fainted when they saw Sergio in person or the fan who ran onto the field in Vienna’s Ernst Happel to shake Sergio’s hand. As a Madridista there is nothing that moves me more than Iker’s sacrifice both physical and emotional for the club. If I were to have one of those crazy “fan moments” it would be seeing San Iker crying, as he did against Mallorca. Forget the exorbitant fine; I am not sure if I could handle being banned from attending Real Madrid or Spain matches so I wouldn’t risk it but I know that in the good and the bad when I have seen Iker teary eyed, I have said to myself “I wish I could hug you and wipe away your tears, so here is a virtual hug and tissue.” There is something legendary about a one-club-man that nobody can create. It’s more than being on a list with Santiago Bernabeu, Camacho, Chendo, Sanchis and Raúl. It’s the purity of Blanco.
